Joseph Beuys

Joseph Beuys – Photography by Robert Lebeck

Joseph Beuys (12 May 1921 – 23 January 1986 in Düsseldorf), was a German artist who produced a number of drawings, sculptures, performances, videos, installations and theories, in an artistic body of work that was highly committed to issues of humanism, ecology, sociology – and in particular anthroposophy. He then founded the Organisation for Direct Democracy in 1971, and finally the Free International University in 1972. At the same time, he divulged his concept of “social sculpture” as a total work of art.
